Palliative Care
Volunteering at North Shore Hospice Palliative and Supportive Care
Volunteers are active participants in providing compassionate care to those who are terminally ill and to their families, having dedicated more than 11,000 hours in 2010. Our goal is to enable each person to live each day in comfort and dignity.
Program description
After completion of the 33 hour Basic Volunteer Training, are assigned a mentor for their first few months of volunteering. They volunteer on a weekly basis and participate in a monthly volunteer education and support meeting. Volunteers may be involved activities such as sitting at the bedside, visiting with patients and families, mealtime companioning, offering hand or foot rubs (after training), serving meals, kitchen clean up, reading, board or card games or energy work (if qualified).
What you’ll learn
Develop your communication skills, learn about history of the hospice movement, grief & loss, spiritual care, social & emotional challenges, music therapy and medical support of the dying. Many find
volunteering to be truly an amazing opportunity to learn and to grow. In the everyday moments, we experience compassion and love, and the resilience of the human spirit.
Qualifications
Are you compassionate with good listening skills? Are you able to commit to regular ongoing weekly participation as well as monthly education and support meetings? If so, you may be a good fit for the Palliative and Supportive Care volunteer team. Strength in cultural diversity is also an asset.
